Instructions and FAQ
Place your brass cartridges, stainless steel tumbling pins, and water in your rotary (or magnetic) tumbler. Depending on your tumbler's capacity, the amount of water needed varies, but 1/2 drum full is a good starting point.
Using the included scoop, reference the table below as a starting point on how much detergent is needed to thoroughly clean your brass. Do not overload your tumbler as your brass will require additional cleaning cycles and premature motor failure may occur.
Check your brass every 15 minutes to determine if additional cleaning is necessary. As you perform more cleaning cycles, you'll have a better sense of how long it takes to clean your brass thoroughly. After cleaning, rinse your brass thoroughly.
Water Used | Soil Level | Teaspoon (5g) | Tablespoon (15g) |
---|---|---|---|
0.5 quart (0.5 liter) for 1 quart drum | Light | 1 | |
Heavy | 2 | ||
2 to 3 quarts (2 to 3 liters) for 1 gallon drum | Light | 1 | |
Heavy | 2 | ||
For 1 gallon (4 liters) of water | Light | 1 | 1 |
Heavy | 2 | 2 |
Depending on the condition of your brass, local water quality, and drum load, more or less detergent may be needed than what is specified above. Experiment with the amount of powder using your setup to determine what works best for your needs.
CAUTION: Keep out of reach of children. May be harmful if ingested or inhaled. If skin contact occurs, rinse affected areas thoroughly with clean water. MSDS available upon request.
Q: Will I need to use a water softener with the detergent?
A: No. Brass Shine is designed to work on its own with all types of municipal and purified water types. Just scoop the necessary amount and start your tumbler.
Q: What type of tumbling media should be used?
A: The best tumbling media to use is Stainless Steel Tumbling Media by guntap. If you do not already use this media, purchase some to ensure your brass gets as clean as possible.
Q: How long will it take to clean my brass?
A: There are many variables that can affect this measurement, such as the capacity of your tumbler, the dirtiness of your brass, the amount of detergent used, the amount of stainless pins used, etc... But to get your brass thoroughly clean, it will take between 30 minutes and 2 hours.
Q: When using your detergent, my brass is coming out with a black film and/or not completely clean. What gives?
A: Make sure you follow our guidelines carefully. Running your tumbler for an extended period of time is not a good thing as the cleaning solution can become oversaturated and the dirt will redeposit on the brass. Also, be sure to use the proper amount of detergent and water in your tumbler. Check every 15 minutes to see if additional cleaning is necessary.
Q: My brass is discoloring and/or spots are appearing after cleaning. Why is this happening?
A: Be sure to always rinse your brass either by hand, or by running a clean water cycle in your tumbler. Left over detergent residue can cause spotting and discoloration. This is merely cosmetic and does not affect the function of your brass.
Q: How long will this bag last?
A: 1 pound of Brass Shine can create up to 25 gallons of cleaning solution. Depending on how often you clean your brass, the dirtiness of your brass, and the size of your tumbler, it may be a long time before you need to purchase more detergent.
Q: My brass is extremely dirty. Will this get all the corrosion and dirt off my brass?
A: Yes, as long as you have the proper tumbler, use stainless steel tumbling pins, and don't overload your tumbler. We've taken brass that appeared unsalvageable and made it look brand new.
Q: Will I save money using your detergent?
A: Yes, in both chemicals used and time saved. By using Brass Shine, you will quickly add the same amount of detergent each time, eliminating the whole "squirt of this" and "a shake of that". You'll also be eliminating unnecessary chemicals from your cleaning process that are found in dish detergents and water softeners, such as fragrances, anti-bacterial agents, water, and other fillers.
Q: Is Brass Shine safe to people and the environment?
A: Brass Shine uses biodegradable ingredients that are very similar to those found in dish detergents and hand soaps. You should wear gloves when handling the detergent and avoid breathing in any of the airborne powder. If any detergent contacts your skin, rinse thoroughly with clean water. If inhaled, seek an open-air location.
The detergent can be safely disposed to a municipal water supply. However, you should always dispose of the dirty water from your tumbler in a responsible fashion according to your local waste disposal guidelines. The reason for this has to do with the contaminants that may be found on your spent brass cartridges.
Q: Where is Brass Shine made?
A: It is a proprietary blend made in our Texas facility. We do not repackage our formulation for other companies.

Brass Shine Powdered Detergent
Been using it for years and never have been dissatisfied once, great stuff.

Excellent stuff and easy to use
I cleaned about 1200 .223 cases in my tumbler (not all at once) using GUNTAP stainless steel pins and a concoction recommended by some fellow reloaders. The brass came out looking worse than it did when it went in the tumbler. The brass still felt "greasy" from the sizing lube and was duller than it was when it went in. I was very disappointed at the results. I then remembered the free sample of BRASS SHINE that came with the GUNTAP pins I bought. Ran 200 of the cases through the tumbler with the BRASS SHINE and as the name implies the brass was shining. Had enough left from the first batch to run a second. Forget the concoctions, get the stuff that really works! I'll be ordering a quantity so I don't run out. Excellent stuff and easy to use.
